The Wales International Development Hub is a new Welsh Government funded initiative, hosted by the WCIA, to support international development networks in Wales.
As a devolved nation with a statutory duty to sustainable development, Wales’ contribution to international issues is vibrant and unique.
The Hub will provide a collective and collaborative space which can further meet and enhance Welsh civil society organisations’ appetite for, and contribution to, international development. Working with partners across the Welsh sector, the Hub will bring together a coherent schedule of events, training and new collaborative opportunities.
The aim is for the Hub to become a focal point for organisations working on international development; a means to facilitate their collaboration and enhance their impact on development initiatives, bringing benefits to citizens and communities both in Wales and in developing countries.
The Hub’s primary activities include delivering a suite of training opportunities to enhance the capacity of the sector, in addition to maintaining a calendar of events, campaigns and opportunities within Wales to support networking, collaboration and awareness.
Consultation is currently ongoing, as groups across Wales discuss their desires for how the Hub can best support them. Future areas of work could also include media representation, dialogue with Welsh Assembly Members and the facilitation of dialogue with UK and international development networks.
The partners instrumental in instigating and managing the hub include are Fair Trade Wales, the Sub-Saharan Advisory Panel, the Network of Development Researchers, Wales Africa Community Links, Wales for Africa Health Links, SMIDOS and international NGOs including Oxfam and Christian Aid .
The Welsh Centre for International Affairs hosts the Hub from its base in the Temple of Peace, Cardiff.
Hannah Sheppard took up the post of Hub Co-ordinator in February 2012 and will work with networks of grass roots civil society and organisation-led initiatives – diaspora communities, community and hospital links, Fairtrade and other local campaign groups – as well as major development agencies with bases in Wales such as Oxfam, Christian Aid, Tearfund and CAFOD.
Hannah will also be co-ordinating the Wales International Development Summit and dialogue days discussing the latest international development issues.
