Developing Global Citizenship online Teacher Training 14 May
How do you develop ethical, informed citizens in your classroom? To answer this question, WCIA ran a twilight session on 14 June with teachers from across Wales. The session covered what it means to be a global citizen and how to develop the skills, knowledge and values that learners need to engage with the world in the 21st Century.
The characteristics agreed to be part of an ethical, informed citizen included being curious, empathetic, open minded and understanding as well as thoughtful and reflective, and willing to discuss and disagree where it mattered.
How do develop those competencies?
The session explored how using using stimulus like Philosophy for Children, themed weeks, student lead learning and open conversations can develop those comptences.
The group explored the impact of WCIA initiatives including Peace Schools, Model United Nations, debate training and Changemakers, our programme aimed at student empowerment on global issues.
Head of Global Learning, Amber Demetrius said:
The INSET was a great opportunity to exchange expertise: for teachers, a chance to explore how new resources and techniques could support the ethical citizenship purpose in teaching and learning. For the WCIA, a chance to gather first-hand experiences from the classroom to inform our future learning offers.
