To mark Remembrance Day on 11/11, we will be offering 2 Temple Tours with a particular focus on the Wales National Book of Remembrance.
This is the 2nd session over lunchtime, from 13.00-14.30, which will focus on the story behind Wales’ WW1 Book of Remembrance, and how those who survived the Great War sought to make a reality of the pledge ‘Never Again’ through unprecedented peace building campaigns throuigh the 1920-30s.
The earlier 1st session (from 10-12) will differ only in offer the opportunity to participate in the national ‘minute’s silence’ from the sanctity of Crypt in Wales Temple of Peace, where the WW1 Book of Remembrance, the nation’s rollcall of the fallen, is housed: a unique and deeply moving experience.
Depending upon the weather, attendees may also be the opportunity to visit Wales’ War Memorial in Alexandra Gardens neighbouring the Temple (for which the Book was created as the monuments’ ‘rollcall’).
Wales’ Temple of Peace and Health was not only the Welsh nation’s memorial to the fallen of World War 1, but a catalyst for efforts to advance peace, health and international relations for future generations. The founders envisioned a building ‘for the people’, architecturally steeped in symbolism and award-winning art deco style, that would inspire movements of Welsh men and women to rid the world of the twin scourges of disease and war.
Since its opening in 1938, the Temple has been at the heart of Welsh efforts to build a better world: from the NHS to the United Nations, bodies have been born here and global campaigns catalysed. Explore this iconic space, and discover many hidden histories from Wales’ rich ‘Peace Heritage’ , by joining this guided tour with WCIA’s heritage team.
Following some lunchtime Temple Tours, WCIA also offer visitors the opportunity to explore the Temple Archives with support from a WCIA member of staff or volunteer. If you would like to take advantage of this support to explore the Archives, please email in advance: walesforpeace@wcia.org.uk
