To celebrate International Women’s Day, and to launch WCIA’s exhibition ‘Women, War & Peace’ in Bangor, join us at Storiel for a free lunchtime lecture by Annie Williams, presenting ‘Votes for Women: the Bangor Suffragists’.

The struggle for female suffrage was fought by Suffragettes and Suffragists. They used different methods to promote their messages and in Bangor the Suffragists were the most active. They were an extraordinary group of principled women who were highly organised and effective.  The story of the Suffragists has been overshadowed by the tactics of the Suffragettes that caught the news headlines but both groups need to recognised for their contribution in gaining votes for women.” Annie Williams

Many suffragists in the 1920s also became active in the Welsh women’s peace movements, explored by the ‘Women, War & Peace’ exhibition.

A choir will assemble to sing the ‘Pankhurst Anthem’ at 1.40pm.

Event organised by Gwynedd Museums & Galleries.
