On Tour Nuclear Free Wales (Bangor)

The threat from nuclear weapons and nuclear accidents has returned with a vengeance during the Ukraine War. Even before the current hostilities, both Russia and the USA were ‘modernising’ their weapons of mass destruction. Last year Boris Johnson proposed increasing the UK’s nuclear arsenal, in breach of the UN’s nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). We now learn that plans are being made to upgrade military bunkers at RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk to accommodate new US nuclear weapons.

We’ve been here before, which is why a small CND CYMRU exhibition currently touring Wales is so timely. In 1982, with the Clwyd Declaration of a Nuclear-Free Wales, all the (then 8) County Councils in Wales voted against nuclear weapons being stationed here in Wales. The exhibition celebrates that landmark decision 40 years on, and urges support for the UN’s 2021 Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW, a global ban).

The exhibition is coming to the Quaker Meeting House in Dean Street, Bangor 22^nd-29^th April, viewable at time shown below. Bangor City Council, Gwynedd County Coucil and the Senedd have all voted in support of the TPNW.
