Hidden Histories Toolkit

Wales for Peace have supported many volunteers, schools and community groups across Wales through exploring hidden histories of peacemakers from the last 100 years, and sharing their stories publicly as part of Wales’ overall ‘peace heritage’ story. This ‘Hidden Histories Toolkit’ has been put together to guide volunteers through the process of researching and creating their own projects and communication products, using links to online references and resources to make it as easy as possible, and to develop fun and transferable skills along the way!

Planning your Project

So if I'm going to produce something about a history that's hidden.. how am I going to find it?! The first step is to find out what information may already exist; and what 'sources' you might use to find out more.

Researching for your Story

Having done your initial planning and research, you aree now ready to gather material for your Hidden History. You may already have stumbled across some interesting documents in a library or archive; you may have identified some people you'd like to interview; or you may want to take some photos or record some video / audio footage.

Recording your Material

Now you have researched and gathered your material, comes the really creative part of your project: bringing it together. There are a range of different writing skillsets relevant to whichever 'response pathway' you are choosing to share your hidden history; on this page we link to some useful tools and tips for editing your story.

Once you have completed writing up your story, you need to edit it!

The moment of truth: when you share your creative masterpiece with the world. There are a wide range of web fora through which you can share what you have produced - use as many as possible to get it shared as widely as possible, and who knows - perhaps your story might 'go viral'!
