Sam Ward has re-joined WCIA as Climate Cymru Manager to call for a decade of urgent, fair action to address climate and nature emergencies.
Last year, Sam led the Climate Cymru campaign to take 13,500+ diverse voices from communities all over Wales, to the United Nations Climate Conference COP26 in Glasgow. Alongside the Youth Climate Ambassadors, Climate Cymru demanded action from politicians and ensured Welsh voices were represented at this global event.
Climate Cymru started as an idea for a grassroots campaign and has now grown to become an active movement with more than 250+ climate-conscious organisations as stakeholders, around 50 ambassadors, and a growing network of allies from all across Wales, including unions, businesses, community groups universities, NGOs and social enterprises.
Now, with renewed funding for the next two years, Sam will work with new and existing partners, Stop Climate Chaos Cymru (SCCC) and ambassadors to strengthen and continue to build a powerful movement for climate and nature action from within Wales.
95% of respondents to our post-COP evaluation said they Climate Cymru had an important role in the years ahead, Sam said:
“I am looking forward to working with local communities, partners and Welsh leaders. A lot of good work is already being done by communities and organisations in Wales. I hope to see more communities in Wales able to shape a better future for themselves – cleaner air, more affordable energy, healthy, locally grown food, access to nature, more connected and resilient communities. It’s a strong motivator to succeed, especially compared to the hardship that ‘business as usual’ is already bringing to many, and will bring to us all if we don’t act.
Chair of the Stop Climate Chaos Cymru Coalition, Mari McNeill said: ‘Last year the Climate Cymru played such a key role bringing communities in Wales together to call for urgent action at COP26. And we know still that without this urgent and transformational action that those at the frontline of the climate emergency will be plunged further into poverty and hunger. We’re thrilled that Sam is re-joining Climate Cymru at a critical point in time, as we capitalise and build on the momentum of COP26, expand and diversify the network, and ensure that Wales has a continued authentic leadership position on climate justice within the UK and globally.’
