‘FAR FROM HOME’ by A48 Theatre tells the fascinating story of how seven Australian soldiers came to be buried in Cathays Cemetery in Cardiff during WWI. Eleven thousand miles away from their families, these men had only the nurses of 3rd Western General Hospital to confide in. Their revelations are sometimes witty, sometimes poignant, always tragic.
Nurses, in turn, found themselves writing to fathers, mothers and wives telling of their loved-one’s last hours – a job they had no training for. Writer and researcher of the piece, Kathy Thomas, found herself struck by the parallels to NHS staff who had to stand in for family members at bedsides during the pandemic.

‘TEMPLE TOUR’ TICKETS / EVENTBRITE PROFILE – 6.00PM
A48 Theatre Company is delighted to be working in partnership with WCIA at Wales’ Temple of Peace for this production. The Nation’s memorial to the fallen of WW1, and housing within its Crypt beneath our feet the National Book of Remembrance, the first of three performances will take place at this amazing venue on Friday Nov 11th 2022 at 7.30 pm.
The performance will be preceded by a guided ‘Temple Tour‘ from 6pm led by the Temple’s Heritage team, which will include the opportunity to be part of a traditional ceremony, ‘the turning of the page’, bearing witness to the 35,000 men and women of Welsh service or ancestry who fell during World War One (please register for the tour via this Eventbrite Link). There will also be a Remembrance tour at 10.30am in the morning, for the ‘minute’s silence’ at 11am.
The second performance will be on Saturday Nov 12th at 7.30pm at St John’s Church, Canton – also an auspicious venue given its proximity to Ninian Park School which was taken over to become part of 3rd Western General Hospital.
The third performance will be in the chapel at Cathays Cemetery on Nov 13th at 2,00 pm. This is the home of The Commonwealth War Graves where the soldiers lie.
A48 Theatre Company has become recognised for its contribution to the Cardiff and Vale cultural and heritage scene through its performances of ‘Graveyard Voices’ to sell-out audiences. “A lot of interest has been shown in this documentary drama and I think tickets will sell quickly,” said Director Ray Thomas.
PERFORMANCE TICKETS for 7.30pm at £10 each can be bought from www.a48theatrecompany.com or the Ticketsource box office. Refreshments will be available at each venue.
Tickets for WCIA’s TEMPLE TOUR tickets starting from 6pm can be booked via Eventbrite.
